How to Organize Your Kid's Art & Toys and Create the Playroom of Your Dreams

Do you dream of a playroom that you can walk through and the kids can easily keep neat? If you are ready to turn down the volume and keep toys & art supplies from turning into clutter, here are 9 neat ideas to get you started.

Toy Shelf Organizer

Sort Everything. Collect everything in one place. Group items "like with like" such as Dolls, Purses, Train sets, Small Toys, Toys that Require Supervision, etc. Assess how much you have before thinking about the storage solutions. As you sort, set aside a container for toys with missing items. As you sort and find the missing pieces, put them in the container too. When you have all the pieces, you can give the complete toy, game or art kit a permanent home. Set Limits. Determine how much of everything is a reasonable amount to keep. Do they really need 72 stuffed animals? Perhaps 10-20 is a reasonable limit. Remember, kids actually get overwhelmed when they have too much stuff. They take far better care of their things and enjoy them more when they have fewer of them. Conduct a Treasure Hunt. Have your child pick his or her favorites according to the limits you have set. Set aside the rest to donate. Let them know that the rest will be going to kids who don't have as much. You might even want to spend quality time with your child writing a note to the kids who might receive the toys. Assign Homes & Containers. Now that you know what you have and have a reasonable amount, store smaller items in containers by category and label each container. TIP: Put pictures on the containers so that your child knows where to put things away. Let your child help by choosing pictures and applying them. This is a fun way to involve your child in learning organizational skills. For larger items such as big trucks, assign a "parking spot" on a shelf or on the floor. Make Things Easy to Access and Easy to Put Away. Store frequently used items that children can use without supervision on lower shelves that they can access. Use containers without lids for frequently accessed items. Lids are difficult for children to use and discourage them from using the storage solution. Separate arts and crafts supplies in square or rectangular bins for easy stacking and to maximize use of storage. Be Safe. Store items requiring supervision either out of reach or locked. For example, if you have really young children, you probably want them to ask you to get down crayons, paints etc. If you use tall shelving, anchor them to the wall so they can't fall over. Store heavy items on the bottom shelves. Teach the Kids How Put Everything Away. Kids don't always know what to do when you tell them to put stuff away. Take the time to teach your kids how to organize. Explain to them that organizing their toys will make it easy to find them later and prevent them from losing toys. Once you have a system in place, practice using the system with them for several days in a row. Help them put away toys and find them by making a game out of it, such as conducting a "treasure hunt". Ask them to find things, or to put away several different items in their new locations. For example, "Where are your favorite talking toys?" "Where does this stuffed animal go when you are done playing with it?" Give lots of praise for correct answers. Be Creative. Containers don't have to be expensive. You can use plastic containers, or even empty tissue boxes. You can even turn decorating containers for art supplies into an art project. Maintain. Once you have pared toys down to a reasonable number and given each toy a home, you need to keep the amount of toys you have under control. Going forward, maintain the limits you've set by adopting a "Give to Get" policy. So, whenever your child gets a new toy, have them pick one to donate. This is a great way to teach your child the joy of giving. Set up a monthly donation pick up or drop off with your favorite charity and you'll never have to do a big purge again!

Organize Home 101 - 7 Sure-Fire Tips to Get an Organized House

Organize home 101 is a two stage process. Stage 1 is getting things under control, especially clutter. Stage 2 is about regular routines so you maintain an organized house. Follow these tips for success.

Toy Shelf Organizer

#1. Keep things simple and practical. Use transparent storage bins and boxes. Use color coded labels. Paste photographs on storage boxes to represent the contents. Create a place for everything and keep everything in it's place. Store frequently used items near where they are used.

Toy Shelf Organizer

#2. Declutter your storage. Pick a closet or cabinet at a time. Plan ahead and obtain any dividers or storage boxes and labels that you'll need. Pull everything out. Sort the contents into piles for rubbish, recycle, charity donation, selling and keeping. While it's empty, give the closet or cabinet a good clean. Store anything that's to be kept. Move on to the next storage item and repeat.

#3. After decluttering your storage, figure out if you need any additional storage. Be creative. Go for dual-function furniture, like beds and coffee tables with built in drawers.

#4. Set up a simple system to manage your paperwork. Red box file to store all tax documentation, blue box file to store all receipts, green box file for bills to be paid, yellow box file for all instruction manuals... and so on.

#5. Set up a simple system to manage tasks and "to do lists". Calendar with planner. Diary for scheduled actions like pay credit card bill. Keep a pad and pen in a fixed location that you can add shopping items to as you discover you are running low on.

#6. Daily routines: Review your "to do list", calendar and diary. Deal with that day's paperwork and mail. Go round the house with a basket, collecting anything that's "lying around" and return them to their proper place.

#7. Weekly routines: Do a small decluttering job, like clearing out a drawer or shelf. Dispose of all old newspapers and magazines. Check around the house for any clutter problems, especially on surfaces and floors.

7 Tips For Getting Organized

Most of us can use some tips for getting organized, especially when it comes to organizing kids´ rooms, because kids' rooms are infamous for being disaster areas. While this is a normal symptom of childhood, it mostly comes from not having everything set up in an easy to access manner. Children are just not good at keeping organized rooms and putting things up, so you want to make it fun and interesting, and most importantly, easy. This article will give several house organizing tips, and in particular, ideas on how to go about integrating a little organization into your childrens´ rooms.

Toy Shelf Organizer

1) Kids´ rooms can be a real nightmare to get organized, just because of the sheer number of books, toys, and various other things that they have accumulated over time. So, the first step is to search through everything and remove at least half of it. Throw out anything that is broken and/or useless, give away anything and everything that no one plays with any longer and hasn't in years, and move on to the task of organizing the rest.

Toy Shelf Organizer

2) A really good way to keep kids' rooms organized and free of clutter is to use clear plastic containers with colored lids. Toys like blocks and fast food chain toy characters can be stashed away in these clear containers, along with games and other materials. Although you can label the boxes, the most effective way to go is to color code them. You can place all shared toys in boxes with red lids, all of your son's toys in blue-topped containers, and your daughter's toys in pink-topped boxes. This is a very effective method to use in organizing and keeping everything sorted out, especially in kids´ rooms that are shared.

3) Ziploc bags are great for keeping small bits and little trinkets that just can not be thrown away. Beads and marbles are good prospects for the Ziploc treatment.

4) For really small items like seed beads, pins and other miscellaneous miniature items, you can keep them in individual baby food jars. Childrens´ rooms tend to amass these sorts of things, so you may as well find a place for them. Building sets can benefit greatly from just a few baby food jars to keep nails and screws.

5) One of the best tips for getting organized involves placing a plastic shoe organizer on the back of the door. It is a perfect way to give kids´ rooms a little surplus storage space without spending any money on furniture. The clear pockets are just the right size to hold stuffed animals, dolls and their clothing, and any number of assorted medium-sized toys.

6) Under bed space is commonly used in the kids' rooms, but only to hide away messes! Turn that blank space into something useful by buying rolling containers that are designed to go under a bed. Not only will you have less dust bunnies to get rid of, but you will have the perfect place to store puzzles and floor mats, or out-of-season clothing and bedding for kids´ rooms.

7) Colorful hooks on the wall are another nifty addition to kids´ rooms. Instead of being pressured to put away jackets, purses and bags, they can easily hang them from a hook and you'll be thrilled that the room looks much more organized and neater. If you get a hook unit that also comes with a shelf or basket attached to it, you will have extra storage space for more small-scale items as well.

Kids´ rooms are never going to be spic-and-span for long, but at least you can put a dent in the chaos! All of the suggested ideas and tips for getting organized above are just right for any kids´ room and work just as well for boys and girls.
